Subject: Statement on the issue of Coca Cola with Foreign Object

Consumers Union of Japan (CUJ) is a Japanese consumers organization established in 1969 and has been broadly active in coordinating with Foreign and Domestic consumers organization to protect the consumers.

Recently, we came to know that Mr. Masaharu Takasu who is staying for a job in your country met the damage on his health after he drank Coca Cola and up to now, still suffering from the damage, since there was a piece of mosquito coil inside the bottle of Coca Cola.

According to the information we obtained, the attitude of Coca Cola for the incident was insufficient by reacting by sending 2 cartons box of Coca Cola products and saying that they will bear the medical treatment cost in a local clinic (which was not yet paid even), without any apology to him, and insisting that such kind of case is impossible to happen, hinting that Mr. Takasu accuses falsely for the purpose of gaining money from the Coca Cola Company. Due to such reaction by Coca Cola, Mr. Takasu decided to fight with Coca Cola in the court worrying that same damages would be repeated to happen in future.

In Indonesia, it is reported that besides the case of Mr. Takasu, the products of Coca Cola contains mosquito coil, battery, plastic objects and gave the harm to consumers while the company occupies 90% of soft drink market in Indonesia (according to the local news papers). In any such cases, the victims have been compensated with a level of exchanging with new products. However, judging from the fact that several cases happened, we cannot deny the possibility that Coca Cola has problems of its quality control of the products.

Additionally, in your country, in line with the development of women's work and fast food industry, small children are often eating and drinking in the fast food restaurant in some occasions like birthday party, without accompany by parents. And in the situation, children also drink Coca Cola ordinarily.

We understand that Indonesia is famous of its beautiful spots and its clean city and visiting place by a lot of tourists from Japan. It will be a very big problems internationally, in case sufficient control and reaction is not taken by Indonesian government, Coca Cola, consumer organization, from the sense of the safety of food and drinks which have deep influence to the human body being not secured.
